NGUYA FLNG Project: Key Solution contributes to a landmark development in Congo

The NGUYA Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) unit has officially set sail from Shanghai, marking a major milestone in Eni’s Congo LNG Project within the Marine XII concession, offshore the Republic of Congo.
The unit will play a key role in expanding the country’s LNG production capacity, supporting both local energy development and the global energy transition.

The project, realized in collaboration with Wison New Energies and supported by Key Solution’s engineering expertise through Senior Engineer Fabio Matricardi, stands as a benchmark in the evolution of floating LNG technology. It combines efficiency, safety, and sustainability, the same principles that guide Key Solution’s work in automation and industrial innovation.

A New Standard in LNG Engineering

The NGUYA FLNG measures 376 meters in length, 60 meters in breadth, and will be moored at a depth of 35 meters offshore Pointe-Noire.

With a liquefaction capacity of 2.4 million tons per annum (MTPA), it will operate alongside the Tango FLNG (0.6 MTPA), already in production since December 2023, bringing the total capacity of the Congo LNG Project to 3 MTPA by the end of 2025.

Designed with advanced technologies to ensure a reduced carbon footprint, the NGUYA unit integrates CHART’s IPSMR® liquefaction process and SPB® tank systems, ensuring high energy efficiency and reliable LNG storage performance.

It also features dual-fuel gas turbine generators and waste heat recovery units (WHRU) to minimize emissions while maintaining operational excellence.

“We are proud to have contributed to such a complex and forward-looking project,” said Fabio Matricardi, Senior Engineer at Key Solution. “Our involvement in the NGUYA FLNG development reflects Key Solution’s commitment to engineering innovation, quality, and international collaboration.”

Record Time-to-Market and Sustainable Design

Conceived, designed, and built in just 33 months from contract award to sail away, the NGUYA FLNG sets a record for time-to-market in the global LNG sector.

Its modular and flexible design allows the unit to process gas from multiple fields, ensuring scalability and adaptability for future offshore developments. In parallel, Eni and its partners have refurbished the Scarabeo 5 drilling rig into a floating production and compression unit, which will supply processed gas to the NGUYA FLNG.

This innovative transformation, achieved through industrial reuse, embodies a concrete example of circular economy principles, reducing both costs and environmental impact.Work on the subsea infrastructure for Phase 2 of the project is progressing on schedule, enabling mooring and startup by the end of 2025.

Key Solution’s Role

Through the contribution of its engineers, Key Solution has supported the project’s automation, control, and quality management activities, ensuring alignment with the highest international standards.

“We are proud to have contributed to such a complex and forward-looking project,” said Fabio Matricardi, Senior Engineer at Key Solution. “Our involvement in the NGUYA FLNG development reflects Key Solution’s commitment to engineering innovation, quality, and international collaboration.”

This collaboration reaffirms Key Solution’s capacity to operate within complex, multinational energy projects, delivering Italian engineering excellence to global initiatives that advance efficiency and sustainability in the energy sector.
